目前探明全球可燃冰储量的甲烷是大气圈中甲烷的5000倍，在开采的过程中，即使如此巨大的甲烷总量哪怕是0.5%进入大气层，对全球变暖的影响也是难以估量的，如果开采中稍有不慎，则必然会加剧温室效应。在海洋中开采可燃冰带来的环境问题更多，一方面甲烷如果直接进入海水中，则会很快发生微生物的氧化反应，从而会改变海水的化学属性，如果大量进入，其氧化过程中会消耗海水中大量的氧气，使得海洋缺氧，这样势必会加速海洋生物的死亡；

在开采可燃冰的过程中，会分解大量的水，这些水会稀释岩层空间，使得地层结构稳定性变差，容易引发地质灾害。
